Tackling hills is one of the most important off road techniques to perfect, to ensure safety on hills the first thing to learn and practice repeatedly until it's correct is what to do when the hillclimb fails. The instant the vehicle stops moving forward is the time to reverse back down the hill in a straight line using only engine braking, not the vehicle brakes. This requires quick reactions from the driver as the ideal method is to be able to flick into reverse gear quickly so only the slightest application of the brakes is needed.
If the vehicle has stalled then a slightly different approach is needed. With your foot on the brake pedal, engage reverse gear then slowly release the brakes.
With a flick of the starter, the vehicle should reverse gently down the hill regardless of whether the engine is running or not.
Descending hills is actually easier than climbing them, using the lowest gear available choose the straightest route down the hill, take your feet off the brakes and clutch and let the engine braking lower you down the hill. Always make sure your wheels are pointing straight ahead before the descent and you shouldn't have any problem.
